What is Medication assisted treatment (MAT)?

MAT is an FDA- approved approach that combines medication with counseling/behavioral therapies to treat opioid dependence.  The most promising of these medications is Suboxone (buprenorphine-naloxone), which helps reduce or eliminate cravings and withdrawals.  It is estimated that opioid overdoses have decreased by 76% due to MAT.

How does Suboxone help?

Because it is a partial opioid itself, Suboxone is highly effective for removing any opioid or opioid- like substances that may be in your system (heroin, fentanyl, prescription pain killers, tianeptine, kratom, 7OH/7Hydroxy).

The advantages it has over other medications is that it is nearly impossible to overdose on it, it does not cause one to feel “high” when taking it, and unlike other opioids, one traditionally goes lower in dose over time instead of higher, thereby successfully quitting opioids.

There are 3 phases of treatment: 1) Induction, 2) Stabilization, and 3) Maintenance. Your
initial appointment is during the induction period and prescriptions are usually written
for 1 week, unless you are transferring to TheFamilyMD or have been prescribed
suboxone within the past 2 months. Step 2 is the stabilization phase, which typically
occurs during the first month and is when the dosage is adjusted to ensure you are on
the lowest dose needed to eliminate cravings/withdrawals. The final phase is
maintenance, and this stage can vary from weeks to indefinitely depending on each
person, their goals, motivation and success with tapering off of Suboxone.
Yes, depending on the types and type of symptoms you are experiencing, the doctor will
prescribe adjunctive medication (ex: nausea/vomiting, constipation, insomnia, anxiety,
restless/irritability, sweats, etc) in addition to Suboxone

While TheFamilyMD doctors primarily prescribe Suboxone due to its safety profile, in
certain, unique situations we are able to prescribe Subutex if you are able to provide
documented allergy or adverse reaction to Suboxone.

The short answer is Yes, it is safe. The American College of Gynecology(ACOG)
recommends Subodone during pregnancy for the treatment of opioid use disorder as a
safe and effective option that helps reduce the risks associated with opioid use and
helps stabilize the intrauterine environment. Speak to our doctors to learn more.

At the time TheFamilyMD does not accept insurance. We offer affordable and
transparent self pay options only. Your visit with TheFamilyMD may be reimbursable
through your insurance, however it is important to check with your insurance carrier
beforehand for specific eligibility. Usua
